costume maker + thinker

Charlie Baptist Charlie can’t remember a moment when she wasn’t fascinated by costuming. From dressing up and making clothes for her barbies to styling her younger siblings, she has always been a keen fashionista. What really launched Charlie into her dream career was when she was asked by her drama teacher to costume her high school’s production of Fame the Musical. It was the day before opening and there were a few last-minute alterations from the dress rehearsal needed to be done to make the show perfect (in Charlie’s eyes). It resulted in a needle piercing her finger and bleeding onto a beautiful white dress, but with a quick visit to the hospital to check there were no needle fragments still in her finger she was back in wardrobe the very next day. The cast needed her, nobody else would be able to do those costume changes as efficiently as her.

After graduating in 2011 from Toi Whakaari with a Diploma in Costume Construction in theatre, film and allied industries. Charlie was invited back by all her previous intern employers with paid work. Those employers included 3 Foot 7 Ltd the team behind the Hobbit Trilogy, The World of Wearable Arts and New Zealand Opera. Who have all employed her on a regular freelance basis. This all changed in 2015 with just a suitcase and some wild dreams, Charlie and her partner Matt moved to London to follow their desires in one of the art world’s leading city. If you want to do your best, you may as well learn from the best. It’s a tough industry costuming there is no doubt about it. You really must put your name out here to be seen and heard. Once Charlie received her chance to prove her resourceful, enthusiastic and hard-working aptitudes she made her break and has since worked for Strictly Come Dancing with the BBC, English Touring Theatre Company, Dorset Opera Festival, The Musical Theatre Academy, Acosta Danza – Cuba and London Theatre Company to name just a few.

While Charlie’s ever-expanding network of costume colleagues and friends grow, she has been able to set up a great team of specialist makers and designers who all work together to produce a fantastic array of productions. As a costume supervisor Charlie has worked her magic to make every single production look its very best. You can see examples of shows Charlie has supervised and images of costumes she has constructed in her galleries.
